What a interesting read this has been. But I'm going to stick my neck out and agree with my fellow Canadian. We can never know what would become of them, what their overall potential would have been.
I always find it amusing when we hear how the defendants in prison are so well behaved, how much they have accomplished and achieved while behind bars. Well they were given a 2nd chance at their lives, the 2nd chance that the victims in this crime would never live to see...Sorry, venting.
What would Abigail have become?

I guess for the imprisoned it's a lose/lose situation. If they behave badly in prison they're still just as bad. If they behave well, well it's the least they can do (and deep down we know they're really just as bad). Maybe I sound cynical, but this is a very commonly voiced pov in Manson forums.
It is true that imprisoned murderers have a chance (of continuing to live) that their victims won't, but I have to ask myself whether - in some cases - they don't feel equal anguish to the relatives of the victims for what they have done (and I'm not particularly talking about Manson murderers here). The truth is I don't know, but I would think this is true in some cases - and equally true that in some cases relatives of victims are largely unaffected, or get over it relatively quickly.
As I have said here before, logical imperatives require me to insist that there should be no connection between on the one hand the way murderers behave in prison and their chances of release and on the other the depth of feeling or extent of vocalisation of their feelings of relatives of the victims. The latter cannot and should not in any way determine the former.

Good point jem, but just to use this case for example, would these people have corrected or attempted to correct their lives if their death sentence had not been lifted. I think not. This was the point I was making, but I agree with you also. I've read and heard interviews that when the death sentence was lifted, they had realized that they would now have to live with this the rest of their lives. It would have been easier to accept and live with the death sentence. Always nice chatting with you jem...ciao

Peiper there is nothing clever about what you have said, there is nothing funny about your words. you should be removed from this forum. I have always been opened minded but the things you have said about the victims is not only wrong, it is truly a disgrace, it shows just how callus you are and there is no room for you here. Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of the victims family members read this forum. You should be ashamed because that is what you deserve. Shame.
