Voytek/Gibby: American Flag incident

I'm not American, but reading Sheila Wells' interview, she was really angry with Voy/Gibby for putting the flag over the sofa. Here is the quote:

"I want to make one more point about how Sharon could not hurt anyone's feelings. Abigail Folger and Voyteck Frykowski who lived in Sharon's house had drapped an American flag over the sofa in the sitting room." How could any true American take the holiest good of the nation--the American flag and do this as a joke was how Sheila reacted. She asked Sharon, who was educated as an officer's daughter, how she could tolerate this crime to the flag. "Do you know what she answered?" In Sheilah's voice we hear a surprise, when she says what Sharon's reaction was. "She said: ' Yes, I also do not agree with it. But I may spoil Gibby and Voyteck's fun if I say anything.' "
There were also drugs being taken around her by the Millionairess and her Polish lover (Abigail Folger and Voyteck Frykowski). Although most were suppose to be of the harmless kind. Sheila nods: "I remember an evening in July, about three weeks before the murder. I was with Sharon in the bedroom watching television. In the sitting room on the sofa lay Gibby and Frykowski. Sharon pointed at the both and said sighing: 'These people ... I do not understand this, they are always stoned. ' "

What is the deal there? Why was that something to get angry about?

Moon, what was the joke supposed to be ?

Sheila (and Sharon) seem offended by those two putting a flag on the sofa.. I understand people can be patriotic, but it's not like they were using it as a duvet cover.

An upside down flag was originally seen as a sign of distress, but it is commonly used as a way to show disapproval and disrespect toward America. Seeing as Sharon comes from a military family, she was probably uneasy having such a bold statement against the United States in her house.

I see. I had no idea. And it was upside down wasn't it?

I know that an upside down flag is flown for distress. I don't remember the flag being upside down on the back of the couch. I will have to look back through the crime scene pics and have a look.
I never knew about a so-called "joke" having to do with the flag that was draped over the back of the couch. I had always thought that the flag was layed( to keep it off the ground) there (on the couch) to get it out of the weather or whatever and someone was too lazy to fold it! If it was for political reasons or a bad joke , I would be very disappointed in ST for allowing that to happen! As stated above, she was the daughter of an officer. She should have known better.
Being an American, I don't always agree with my country's policy's or politics, but I would never dis our flag or our troops! CT

But ST said she didn't want to ruin Gibby and Voy's fun.

I imagine when her dad came over to watch the moon landing with them all, she moved it, but it found it's way back.

Yeah, the Col. would have been PISSED if he had seen it!

I can just imagine sweet Sharon asking Gib/Voy if she can remove their offensive flag just until her daddy went home. :D

I think I read in HS that Winifred Chapman or Roman told the police that Voy and Abigail put the flag there, not the killers as was suspected.  Said it was a joke and Sharon didn't approve, but she didn't say anything.  I've read things that proves she has no backbone, such as this, and letting Roman sleep with anything that wears a skirt, etc., but yet, she put her foot down on the Michelle Phillips thing and didn't invite her back to her house after she found out her and Roman, or so I'm lead to believe.  Sharon is what Roberteaux said about William Garretson when he quoted Winston Churchill trying to describe Russia.  Don't know what the exact quote is, maybe Monsieur RBTX can repeat it for us.  Sharon just seems to be such a contradition at times.  Just when I think I got my grip on her, then a piece of new information comes up to mess things up.

It leads me to discuss Sharon/Gibby's friendship... might need a new thread for this.

Thanks BB for clearing up the "joke" thing. I have also read some less than flattering things about ST. Why was she lying in bed in her underware talking to an ex- boyfriend at midnight while her husband was out of the country? Why would she turn her head to  her husbands infidelity and lie to him about her smoking cigarettes? Why would she let him film them making love? I think she was quoted as saying" He lies to me about cheating and I let him think I believe him". Why? Why was she married to a troll in the first place?
I think the Churchill quote is 'A question wrapped in and enigma, surrounded by mystry.
    Suits her good!  CT

Sharon was no klutz that's for sure. Sweet as apple pie but some where in the apple pie, you get one bad apple.

I think Gibby's lack of respect for the flag came when she saw the poverty stricken ghettos. Since her parents divorce, she knew the "American dream" was all a myth. Then it was presented to her. This is America and this is what America ignores.

Let's all agree that this is not the forum to debate America.  We are all entitled to our opinion no matter how wrong it is, every country, including England, has it's share of good and bad, but we can debate those thoughts somewhere else.

    Now, back to the show.

Come on, you weren't offended by that were you...

Nah, no one was offended - this was a prophylactic intervention!

Seriously, we don't want to get into politics on this board, US or otherwise. Plenty of places on the Internet for that.

Where's your village, Moonglow? I've just left Cumbria for Manchester - got out before the rains started!
