– CM thinks he killed CROWE (Dennis Wilson or crew tip Crowe off where to find TEX) so fearing panther retaliation CM makes to gather drugs ‘n dough and disappear into the desert while ensuring no one is clean enough to nark him off, explains motive for Hinman murder, Shea is killed due to learning about Hinman if Atkins is on the money. Zero over some drug dispute or because he knows too much, Manson does get a tad paranoid at times.
The family invests Linda’s 5g or what is left of it in a drug buy to either on-sell to raise more $’s or to split partly for this and part to take to the desert but pivotally gets bad mafia originated product from Voy/Sebring. Manson hears from Cafritz that she and Sharon are at Esalen (MAYBE) and rushes up there to try get some dough off Cafritz, due to this interaction he thinks or he gets told Sharon is not at Cielo house and a drug cargo is arriving there so they should be able to get their investment back... but she can’t give him any dough right now – this gets him shitty so he sends his minions to sort it out with orders to kill if Cielo people don’t make good. Before getting killed Cielo people point a finger at La Bianca's as their suppliers maybe to throw heat temporarily off the actual ones? None of this is meant to come out but Atkins blabs thinking the code of silence she struggles with has her back - wrong - so it all goes to court necessitating murder by the mafia or the family of Leslies lawyer over him doing some real digging (maybe he wanted to call Cafritz to testify), and Cafritz to play dead. I don’t speak so much for myself but for the younger kids at the ranch back in 1969. The young runaways who were fed a mouthful of bitterness toward the law and society, and then pulled into auto theft, drug dealing… Once he settled at Spahn’s Ranch, in Los Angeles, Charles Manson’s wants and needs reached even higher. He had men to get him money and drugs and to do his dirty work.

If Charles Manson thought Helter Skelter was imminent, and he desperately didn’t want to get caught for the murders, why would he still go ahead and arrange for people to be murdered? He wouldn’t.

There was only one “Charles,” and that was Charles Manson. When Manson answered the phone Crowe told him he was a Black Panther (which wasn’t true) and he knew where Manson was and if Manson didn’t come down and give him his money, he and all his Black Panther buddies were going to make a raid at Spahn’s Ranch and kill everyone there.”

If something happened to Crowe no one would be around to tell the Panthers anything. But either way, it had to be done quick. And so Charles Manson told Bernard Crowe he would meet with him and straighten the whole thing up. The plan was that if Manson wasn’t able to talk his way out of the situation, when they got close enough Manson would signal T. J., who was supposed to pull out the gun and shoot Crowe.

Manson was forced to pull the gun himself. He shot Bernard Crowe right in the chest. Crowe fell to the ground and lay still. Later Bernard Crowe told police he’d played dead until Manson left and then got to a hospital. (Atop other problems like the drug hunt he faced) the prospect of retaliation by the Panthers for Crowe’s death…. many of the people in and around Spahn’s Ranch knew he had gone to see Crowe (so he needed to control that risk)…

SO THE HELTER SKELTER STORY WAS NOW NOT A RAP TO HOOK DISCIPLES BY MIRRORING THEIR RACE CONCERNS BUT BECOMING MORE OF A EUPHEMISM FOR “WE MUST URGENTLY DEFEND THE RANCH AND MOVE OUT BECAUSE A BUNCH OF BLACKS IS ABOUT TO ATTACK THE RANCH (ACTUALLY JUST ME CM BUT NEVER MIND THAT DETAIL KIDS)”

I got to hear what he told the men – and he didn’t waste their time with stories of Helter Skelter. Charles Manson told these men he had just killed a Panther and he needed money to split to the desert and he needed it now!

TooLate, thanks for another great read. Is Susan's last book available as hard copy? I'm not hooked up to a printer and my dial-up connection is cheap, slow and unreliable (drop outs very common).
As for witness reliability, I prefer Atkins over Manson via Radio Werewolf. I thought he once said it was the Jews who ran Hollywood/show biz (they certainly built it). Maybe control was a kind of joint effort?
I don't think the mob had an influence re Beach Boy lyrics. The band were Capitol Records recording artists, for whom the group made a fortune for in the early-mid '60s. Capitol also had the luxury of the Beatle phenomenon - a license to print more money than a gangster could dream of. Besides Capitol, the main say, financially and artistically, belonged to tyrant father Murry Wilson, and then Mike Love, a very shrewd business person.

Good info re music biz but I was not suggesting the mafia directed Dennis to change the words of Mansons cease to exist, only that given Manson's fixation on the idea mafia run show biz and his hate of Hollywood that perhaps the missing link was that Dennis told CM he did not change the words because he didn't like the, oh no it was done because... the mafia said so. Poor excuse but one a drug addled mind might feed his... ? highly aggrieved ex lover.

There's always been a very healthy unhealthy relationship between the entertainment world and organised crime. Someone ought to write a book about it ...

Seems to me as if Atkins did her best to lay out both what she knew and made of what she knew, she often stops just short of delivering really interesting stuff, only points people in a direction. I believe this would be as she does not want to pull more people into the pooh or worsen the parole chances of fellow offenders who were looking like surviving her. Even so her text does get quite interesting when lined up against statements made by others over the years. I think it is well worth quite some study. She certainly puts pay to the Helter Skelter nonsense and corroborates things said against HS by others, if unwittingly. I think she could not make a more blatant statement that the killings were over drugs without actually spelling it out, which she carefully avoids doing. I did not read it that way earlier on, but as I've got more knowledge about TLB a re-read after a long interlude changed my take on it.

I'll bite. Here she says the men were given the real low-down. Now if Bobby (per his words in an interview) heard from CM that they were moving there to set up a Rock Festival then that hardly ties in with Helter Skelter and a need to hide in some hole, he was expecting to be in the limelight. Imagine how much drug dealing they could have done had they pulled off a Woodstock not a TLB

Ah, if the Wooly Hophead could today see both the Coachella Festival and the Stagecoach Music event, both that just ended, both near the desert, he would probably lose his mind. These events bring in close to a million people combined, and they are wayyyyy out there.

I found SA's last attempt to be quite the interesting read as well. I was looking for signs of her religious conversion or beliefs, and not finding any, immediately felt that she had ridden that horse into the ground, that it was no longer serving the purpose she wanted it to.

Her recollection of events were interesting to say the least, an outright lie to say the most. She was very effective in distancing herself, and the girls, from any responsibility other than making bad choices. Well, that and killing people... Her husbands fingerprints are all over this, so I was not expecting anything close to reality.

There used to be a musical happening of some sort just past Ocotillo Wells almost every weekend during the summer months back in the day. We used to go and stay all night, do and whatever then leave at dawn before the real heat kicked in. The desert is beautiful under a full moon.

I'd think there was no point in adding Hallelujah every two sentences, the 'book' was concerned only with laying out the background. Writing to Nelson and other ghouls she probably laid the religion on thick as a device to discourage ghouls and to try and ensure the company she was keeping was the type she preferred - other religious folk, who do often use such lingo.

The removal of the biker stuff is very interesting, I've seen mention she was bonking DeCarlo which if true opens up a whole can of worms re the drug angle, yes?

Dilligaffe notes that; "Her husbands fingerprints are all over this" but at least he notes this is more-so for early chapters, and it is to be expected that they collaborated since they were mutual supports and he was her lawyer as well. A good lawyer would have removed anything that was jeopardising of Susan's or other offenders Parole chances before putting it on the net... or was that not it and was he instead motivated by a friendly reminder to stop his Lady from chin wagging, courtesy of the bikers or DDeC, just lately?

From reading the bit about Hinman's death and Beausoleil's rivalry with Manson, it strikes me that Manson, holding the upper hand, knew damned well that BB would make a mess of things and therefore encouraged him by whatever subliminal ways he had to bump off Hinman. Figuring that BB would make such a balls up of it, which he did, with help from CM's machete, it wouldn't be long before BB was caught. Once BB split from Spahn and was on the road to Frisco, could it be CM tipped off the cops: after all, it was unusual that the cops checked out a parked car on spec. Did they know what they were looking for???

They were stopping because a car was stopped on a State Highway in an area that is posted no stopping. This happens dozens of times a day in California. It gave them probable cause to investigate further.
