In 'Charles Manson Superstar' there's a segment where Manson talks about where here's from and he says 'I call it Pice, I'm from Pice", then he goes into the 'you're a likin...you're like kin to me' spiel with Schrek. Anyone ever heard more about what/where Pice is or means, or maybe it's P.I.C.E and stands for something? He doesn't elaborate more in the video and then subject is changed. I bring it up again because was checking out Star's YouTube channel and she happens to say her hometown is Pice, CA, but from what I can tell there is no place. Would be interested in hearing more about this piece of CM rhetoric if more info out there. Here's link to the segment, it's 2:29 in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbjXdJZABy0&feature=related and Stars' youtube is: http://www.youtube.com/user/ATWARwithlies
Ah, interesting, I just happened to download that recently as an audio book but haven't got around to 'reading' it yet. I'll keep my ears open in case that's where this is from as well.
For soem reason, Steve Grogan talking about Grok'ing comes to mind, and Grok is the water ceremony in Stranger...Maybe my brain is fuzzy.
There is a story that a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land was found in the old bus at Bakers. I heard Charles (somewhere) say that he had never read the book, but it would seem that some one else in his circle had. This is a great book! One could see that it could have a influence on the group. I think that among the many monikers that Mary's baby had, Micheal Valentine was one of them, it being the earth name of the main character. I saw Jesus Christ Superstar a while back, with Ted Neeley. Seeing it made me think of a Star Trek episode called The Way to Eden. That made me think of Stranger in a Strange Land. That made me think of Charlie. At the moment I found it interesting, but maybe it was the gin. I don't remember any reference to pice, a pice was a form of currency in India
I think you're right about this. In 'The Family', by Ed Sanders, he draws parallels with 'Stranger in a Strange Land', and some of the behaviors and rituals of Manson and the Family members. I couldn't find the passage in Sanders' book referenced here but, it can be found at Google books, page 10. With time on his hands, I think Manson could have read or understood the book unless others (in prison or at the ranch) read to him. What do you think, water and acid.....used like communion bread and wine?
Somewhere in the archives of Nelson's site there was a letter from Good to Heinlen or the reverse...makes one wonder.
Why do people question Manson's ability to understand books? I think he downplays his conventional intelligence a lot to appear like a dumb hillbilly. So he dropped out of school in third grade, so what? Learning to read is not difficult for most people especially not people with an I.Q like Manson's. Plus, he had years and years in prison to teach himself. How else could he learn so much about Scientology and other systems unless he could read fairly well? And he's read a lot of books written about him over the years.
I have not read anywhere or seen interviews of Manson where he describes himself as an avid or even average reader. Also, I haven't come across anything to suggest that he was self-taught and acquired academic self-discipline like Malcolm X, for example. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this....... Also, my impression of Manson is that he was an avid listener of others.
I agree with this 100%, but I also agree with what Joe said above about the reading, this guy is and was incredibly well read.
I'm not sure that I think that Manson is incredibly well read, but I don't for one minute think that he is stupid. I think he has/had a cocktail personality, although now after all these years in prison, he could be totally nuts. I agree that he does go into the "Okey" role, when it suits him. I feel that Manson is a picker of information, he picks from source to source, filling up his reserve of information, then draws from the information as it is needed. What is it that he says, "I'm a just a mirror". As of late I am enjoying uzername's posts. :twocents:
Course he can read - I'm sure he requests magazines etc be sent to him on his accolytes websites. The 3R's were once imparted to young school children more adequately than today. Yes he plays dumb, as he is a lazy narcissist I'd expect that rather than bother reading he seeks the short cut of having others like librarian Brunner provide verbal synopses whenever possible. Perhaps his more charitable warders now read him bedtime stories, as likely as not he is entering his second childhood again. Bedtime stories all about him.
manson had the women read him the bible all the time, so i would imagine they also read him stranger in a strange land, even though i think he either read it or someone read it to him in prison if i recall correctly he spoke of the book in the family's early days
