I am confused by this using mental issues in the closing. I thought that they were ruled inadmissible? Unless the rules are different for penalty phases?

And for having no fear of death, the girls sat quietly during this. I wonder if Susan Atkins thought the state had a lot of love in its heart to do this to her? (sorry couldnt help myself)

They displayed no fear or concept of the gravity of their situation when filled & wound by Manson's rhetoric & menacing persuasion throughout the duration of the trial.
But this was the end game, & Paul Fitzgerald's plea was graphic & intense. Perhaps fear, together with respect for Fitzgerald, & captivated by his dramatic effort for their lives.
Charles Manson was certainly never going to stand & beg for mercy for Susan, Pat & Leslie. To the contrary, they did their unskilled best to spare him the gas chamber.
Having the master & his puppets/minions tried together, & in the absence of the chief assassin, was a spectacular prosecution coup that trounced Manson at his own game.

And I wonder how many decades ago was Jean Oliver Carver paroled from the custody of the State of California?
