Atkins married him because she believed he had a ton of money and would use that money to help get her out of prison. Actually, the guy had no real money at all and was pretty much a con artist in terms of lying to women in order to get them to marry him. A real character. Whitehouse came later and I've always believed that those two truly loved each other. I'm sure his parents were thrilled about that relationship - apparently he's very intelligent - an Ivy League (I think Harvard) grad whose practice centered solely on Susan. Poor, misguided soul.
