I'm still more than a little surprised that I see the ideas that CM wanted to stay in prison and didn't care if he got sent back and that he was happier there than in free society spouted as gospel. I, for one, simply don't believe it. It's just part of Charlie's rap, part of his con.

If Charlie really wanted to go back to prison when he was released, why not just attack a policeman on the way out? Why not throw a brick through the first storefront window he came across and walk out with as much as he could carry, loiter around until the police arrived?

Why did he decide to take off right after the Hinman murder? Why did he hide in the cabinet? Why didn't he plead guilty to TLB whether he felt he was guilty or not -- why not instead just take a plea and avoid the death penalty and get sent back to a cozy cell? Why does he bother attending parole hearings?

I don't believe it. Not for a second.

He has said it is all other peoples fault he is where he is and he has followers working for his release - so I think it is more a matter of him being resigned to the fact he is a jailbird, in other words he slightly wouldn't mind being out but doesn't care much about being in either. Taken on the chin.
