The mind of a complex person once said. The end is near but I expect you to show up for work in the morning. Swatika 4 sticks = Love, Life, Live, Laugh. I read some where if the L's are to the right they are the sign of evil, but if the L's are to the left they are the sign of goodness ? Any thought on this.

Is'nt the swastika an ancient Indian symbol for some sort of deity or something? Until the Nazis got hold of it.

The Swastika used to be a religious symbol in Russia during WW!. Alexandra carved one in the window at the Ekaterinberg house when they Imperial Family was imprisoned.
The Nazi's got ahold of it and created an aborration.

Love how Charlie makes it everybody else's fault. "I wanted to be good but YOU made me BAD." Yeah, right Charlie. Obviously, you didn't try hard enough.

If Charlie wants to tell us why he did things, I'd just as soon he started with the murders rather than why he carved up his head.

A direct contradiction to more recent explanations, in which he only notes the swastika is a sun sign, a sign of life. Not very genuine our Charlie.

This schematic symbol is used since people started using simbols to communicate, and is still in use. It can mean a lot of things so basically Mr Manson can give it a meaning for every mood he feels and every person asking for it.

Well, yes and no. It will always have resonance according to where and when it is used. In the late 60's people were much closer to WW2 and the National Socialist party in Germany, and it is likely that this is what would have been on the top of people's minds when they saw it, whichever direction the 'arms' were pointing. It is unlikely that people at that time would have automatically identified it with Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism or other religions, or with any other historical and/or oriental reference. unless they were academics or practicants of such religions.

I think there were clearly two stages. CM 'X'-ed himself out of 'our' society, that much is clear. Later, left to think, the modification will have occurred to him, and will have been a separate, conscious decision. I feel it would be special pleading to suggest that its adoption by CM was not with the certain knowledge that people would identify it with Nazidom (add in the dune buggy storm troopers for a better mental picture).

Which does not mean that people cannot interpret it as they will but, as I said, in the late 60s the (Second World) war was still in people's minds.

A few years ago, the largest Catholic cathedral in this community was remodeling their building. And when they had removed a couple layers of flooring in the foyer area, the diocese was left to a considerable amount of public squirming as they explained the numerous sauwastikas laid in the original tile floor.

Jem is right, the common man sees a left-facing, or clockwise, sauwastika and automatically sees a symbol of Hitler's Nazi Party.

No doubt Mike and Jempud, but I do not consider myself a common man! haha

Nor I a common duck. As for Mike, I dare not voice my true opinions for the shillelagh he swings ..

Didn't Sandy and the others claim that he never lead anyone or anything? But in his statement he says you must accept him as our leader? So, if he wasn't leading how can we accept him as one?

Because it was war? :whistling: Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Okay, I was at meetings for most of the weekend, so it could be the crushing fatigue and incipient hallucinations talking, but I think that both Sandy and Charlie were being honest in their comments.

Charlie says he never was the leader of anything -- in that he never actively sought to be the leader of anything, including the Family. That he became the leader of the Family -- whether through gentle/not-so-gentle coercion, drug-induced suggestability, or whatever -- was simply, in his megalomaniac mind, "the will of the people". He became the leader because all his little minions wanted him to be the leader.

And what Sandy says, therefore, is true also -- Charlie was never the leader of anything, in that he never came to the others in the Family and said, "I'm the leader, you're the followers, so now that we're agreed on that here's what's going to happen." To hear some of the more fanatical members of the Family tell it, they joined up/followed/stayed with Charlie because of their love (and, equally as likely, their fear) for him, and he just naturally took "first place" in all their activities, because he was just so loveable and wonderful and fabulous and all that. That he would threaten to kill/beat the crap out of anyone who defied him was ultimately beside the point.

So, finally, when Charlie says that the world must accept him as their leader or have anarchy, all he's saying is that if it be the "will of the people" that he become the leader (think the Family on steroids here, kids -- billions of people simultaneously losing their minds and falling in line with Charlie's rap) he will do so. There's no mention of coercion here, because someday we'll all wake up and realize that the crazy little ex-con with the swastika on his forehead and the dead, dead eyes has the answers we're all looking for.

As I said before, could just be the crushing fatigue, but from where I sit that makes sense to me.
