Thanks to DebS for this. We were discussing whether or not there was a Manson Family so to speak and whether or not they called themselves that. From this guestbook document, it appears they did, dating all the way back to 1968. Perhaps DebS could provide the background and info on this.
The guest book was for a private vacation home where the owner rented to or allowed his friends to stay. The home was located in San Mateo County seven miles from the coast between the towns of Half Moon Bay and Pescadero. San Mateo County is located just north of Santa Cruz County and south of San Francisco County. I purchased the entire guest book from a private party who had been a guest at this vacation home. I am reasonably certain the proceeds from my purchase will not ever go to any member of the Family. I am not in the habit of buying murderabilia but this is such a unique item that I couldn't resist. Also, this incident occured before any known murders, in innocent times, relatively speaking. There are many pages of guests to this home starting in July 1966 and ending October 1971. I tried to find out as much as possible about the circumstances of Manson signing the book but there really isn't much to be told. Apparently Manson and his followers would break into vacant or rarely used places and make themselves at home during their travels. In this particular instance Manson was brazen enough to have signed the guest book. I can only surmise that the owners of the home didn't realize that Manson et al had even been there until after the TLB trials as the guest book continued to be signed during that time. I have never been able to find who was with Manson at the home but I sure would like to know!
Excellent find DebS. Is the letter to authenticate the Guest Book signature? And are you saying CM and the Gang broke into this hostelry and signed Guest Book ? Charlie does have a warped sense of humour, eh.
Yes, Cooltide, the letter is to authenticate the guest book. The Heuer's who are named in the letter appear numerous times as guests in the book. I'm not sure why the Heuer's turned to Inyo County for the authentication but maybe LA was too busy to fool with something like that. Inyo was much slower paced. It does seem that Manson and others did break into the home and then signed the book. They may have even stayed there for a day or two. This should be of no surprise as they did admit to the creepy crawls.
Does it say " Groovy" in the comments section , can't quite make it out for the watermark? He even has the cheek to leave an Address --- Spahn Ranch. Ol' Charlie boy is a comedian for sure. :hk:
