I don't think he's a dangerous person, but criminals are not sent to prison for rehabilitation. People still thinks he deserves to be punished for what he did. That is why he probably never will be set free.
I just feel its too politically toxic at this time for Bruce even though he came close last time around.
While it may be an election year, Jerry Brown will only be entering into his second year as Governor so that will not be a major concern for him. Brown has always been soft on crime, having introduced the Prisoners Bill of Rights in the late 70's, opposing the re-introduction of the DP in California, and of course, giving us Rose Bird. Brown has already quietly approved the parole of dozen's of murderers in the past year. I believe that Bruce Davis has a better chance now, more than ever. Like Endoracat, while I believe that he should remain in prison, it is not too farfetched to see him being paroled.
Talking Parole, when Grogan was paroled , was there a media/ public outcry of any kind or was it done quietly?
What - politically- would be gained by releasing Bruce? I imagine there's a few hundred other characters with less (publicly) notorious records who stand a better chance of being released. I expect Bruce to be at the end of that line. I'm curious though: what grounds can he explore if - again- he meets the parole board approval and then is bounced back by the Gov? Sx
Si, A lawsuit can be filed challenging the validity of the governor's decision. I am at a crossroads right now regarding what Jerry Brown will do. He has quietly been approving the parole in the past year of almost 200 murderers. He does not want much attention on this, for the public is already outraged by the early release of thousands of inmates as well as transferring many inmates from the state level to the local county level. This is contributing to overcrowding in the local level, resulting in a catch and release of arrestee's. Book them and release them. That is why I am am not sure what he will do on Davis. I was talking about this with a friend of mine who is much smarter than I. Actually, all of my friends are much smarter than I. He is a graduate of the Kennedy School of government at Harvard. Brown is trying to push a huge tax increase to the voters of California to try to fix the state budget (rather than making the necessary cuts) and needs all of the voter approval he can get. Releasing someone connected to the Manson Family could potentially cause Brown to lose support, as it could be seen as a greater softness on crime than he already is. Lose of support equals loss of his ballot measure. Right now it is what we used to call a wobbler. Something could fall either way.
Thanks Dil! Yes, I totally agree. Bruce's release could easily highlight the larger issue, and might scupper's Brown's plans. The thing that bugs me though, is from Bruce's point of view - can he appeal any higher? I dare say the answer probably lies in the result of his previous denial, and the fact no approach was seemingly made - in any direction - means the answer is probably "no" Hope you're well, Si
Manson is up this year too. Not sure what month as I am suddenly unable to load the BPT page . I never had a problem with it before now FB
