The social security numbers for Sharon, Abigail, Jay (aka Tom Kummer) are all "active". The only victim of the confirmed Manson Family victims that's social security number is in the death index is Leno LaBianca's. This is odd in my opinion, not sure what to make of it.
I wouldn't want to make anything of it. The SSDI was still a newish concept in 1969 and there was no obligation for relatives to report deaths [to the SS] unless claiming. If a name is missing from the deaths list at that time, it most likely simply means that no benefit was ever requested. Alternatively, but probably less likely, a mistake could have been made on the form requesting the benefit, or when entering the information into the SSDI. But those tend to be followed up by eager beneficiaries. No TFH needed here [either]. Jem
As I recall in order for anyone to collect on social security benefits, be it the card holder or a dependent, one needs to pay into their account for 40 quarters or 10 years. It's quite possible that none of the victims besides Leno Labianca had done that.
A search of the Social Security records seems the most plausible answer. Parent was employed, so he would have had been registered with Social Security.
